Power Efficient Restart-Capable Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Arc Ignitor for Hybrid Rockets

Utah State University is seeking a party interested in licensing an ignitor for hybrid rockets. This specific system has the ability to provide the simplicity and reliability of monopropellant systems, but with the strength of a bi-propellant ignitor. This system may be restarted hundreds of times using non-hazardous materials. Potential fields of interest include both government and private organizations in the Space and Military industries.

USU researchers have developed an ignitor for ABS rocket fuel capable of “Hands-off” re-ignition. This technology removes the use of toxic or explosive materials used in current ignition systems. The system offers the simplicity and reliability of monopropellant system while outputting enthalpy equivalent to bi-propellant ignitors. This system is applicable to any gas-generation system that uses hydrazine or peroxide as the gas generation source.
