Wheelchair Lift Device

Utah State University (USU) Researchers have developed a simple and efficient wheelchair lift device and are seeking to license the technology to interested companies. USU's Wheelchair Lift Device operates smoothly and with minimal effort which allows the user to easily load and unload a wheelchair from the trunk of a vehicle.

  • Vehicle OEMs
  • After-market device manufacturers

  • Compact design fits and adapts to almost any car trunk
  • Easy to operate
  • Safe to use
  • Installs easily
  • Inexpensive solution

The 2002 US Census estimated that there are 2.7 million Americans over the age of 15 who use a wheelchair. Of this number, the majority (approximately 90%) use a manual wheelchair. The average manual wheelchair weighs 45 lbs and can be very difficult and cumbersome to load into and out of a vehicle. There are numerous lift systems in the market that load electric wheelchairs into and out of vehicles (usually a minivan or SUV), but there is a great need for a simple lift system designed to assist individuals to load a manual wheelchair to/from a car trunk.
